This days I've been working with my colleages installing and configuring a new server. We needed LVM so here it's a mini-howto:

I'll suppose that you want to use the entire disk for this purpouse and it is named "/dev/sdb".

1. Partition your new HD. I'll create a new LVM partition type:
   
   

   #fdisk /dev/sdb
   //New partition creation

   //Id 1

   //Now that it is create let's change to LVM type
   >t
   //Partition 1 to change
   >1
   //Type 8e=LVM

2. Install Debian Package: #apt-get install lvm2
3. Create Physical Volume (/dev/sdb1 is my LVM partition): #pvcreate /dev/sdb1
4. Create Volume Group (I'll call it VolumeGroup): #vgcreate VolumeGroup /dev/sdb1
5. Create Logical Volume (I'll call it LogicalVolume with 300GB): #lvcreate -L 300G -n LogicalVolume VolumeGroup
6. Format the Logical Volume (with ReiserFS in my case): #mkfs.reiserfs /dev/VolumeGroup/LogicalVolume

Tips:

Let's suppose that you want to add a new disk:

1. Create Physical Volume (/dev/sdc1 for example): #pvcreate /dev/sdc1
2. Add to your existing Volume Group (named VolumeGroup) your new Physical Volume:#vgextend VolumeGroup /dev/sdc1

If you want to remove a disk (for example /dev/sdc1 again):

1. Remove it from the Volume Group: #vgreduce VolumeGroup /dev/sdc1
2. Remove the Physical Volume: #pvremove /dev/sdc1

I've just seen in Meneame.net how to get a System user session without password in Windows Vista.

1.- Boot your favourite GNU/Linux distro (it can be a Live-CD but it needs NTFS support)

2.- Enter in your Windows Partition and:

cd Windows

cd System32

mv Utilman.exe Utilman.old

cp cmd.exe Utilman.exe

3.- Reboot and load Windows Vista.

4.- In the logon screen Press Windows Key + U (Utilman, that horrible blue screen with many options).

5.- That's it, now you have a command line with system administrator privileges. Now you can run (like in the video) explorer.exe and get the full enviroment.

Sometimes some videoplaying (and other) software doesn't disable the screensaver/suspend mode, so it becomes unusable.

This was my case with Zattoo, an online "TV tunner". Searching on the net I found some answers to this problem:

• If you use KDE you can try uai 1.4 [CPP code here]:

Compiling: $g++ uai.cpp -o uai

Usage: $./uai interval_of_fake_pressing (For example, for a fake key pressing every 10 seconds: $./uai 10)

• If you use another Window Manager you can try this .

It's easy, just 3 steps:

1- #apt-get install ia32-libs*

2- 'ldd' the 32 bit application you are trying to run:

$ldd zattoo_player

3- If some dependencie fails there are two ways to solve this:


"Traditional" Way:

You can search the package in http://www.debian.org/distrib/packages and download it.

For example in the previous example 'libbonoboui-2.so.0' could be found in http://packages.debian.org/lenny/libbonoboui2-0.

It can be downloaded from http://http.us.debian.org/debian/pool/main/libb/libbonoboui/libbonoboui2-0_2.22.0-1_i386.deb

To install it:

//Download the package

#wget http://http.us.debian.org/debian/pool/main/libb/libbonoboui/libbonoboui2-0_2.22.0-1_i386.deb

//Now install it on the 'ia32 suite' directory

#dpkg -X libbonoboui2-0_2.22.0-1_i386.deb dpkg -X libbonoboui2-0_2.14.0-5_i386.deb /emul/ia32-linux/

You'll have to download all the failed dependencies shown as 'Not found' in the 'ldd' output in order to run the application. Once you are done run the application as usual ( probably the executable file will be at /emul/ia32-linux/usr/bin )



"New" Way, using getlibs:

You can also use a package named 'getlibs' to try to download automatically the dependencies.

- To get it: #wget http://www.boundlesssupremacy.com/Cappy/getlibs/getlibs-all.deb

- Install it: #dpkg -i getlibs-all.deb

- Usage: #getlibs [i386_binary_file / i386_deb_package]

This method is easier but it can fail..

Maybe some of you will know about this, but it is possible to get some free software for free (cost: 0€), here are some links to get it:

Not for free but at a very low cost you can get a toasted CD with a GNU/Linux distribution at LinuxCD.org, very good solution if you don't have a broadband connection.

Answer: Implement QoS using tc and MAC filtering (with the u32 classifier reading the header of the packet).

This little hack will allow you to run a DreamCast emulator (NullDC) using WINE under GNU/Linux and play your "backup" games.

1 - Download the emulator (for example from: http://emudev.com/drkIIRaziel/uploads/nulldc_100b1_6.rar )

2- Get the DC BIOS (google ...)

3- Put the BIOS files in the directory 'data' and rename the file 'dc_bios.bin' to 'dc_boot.bin'

4- The emulator is now ready, but we need to "update" WINE:

4.1- Get the lastest Visual C++ Runtime from: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/thankyou.aspx?familyId=200b2fd9-ae1a-4a14-984d-389c36f85647&displayLang=de (Just click "Ja")

4.2- Run the app as usual: $wine vcredist_x86.exe

5- Run the emulator: wine nullDC_100b1_6.exe

Troubleshooting:

- If your screen blinks disable Compiz if you are running it.
