This is not really new, but it is very interesting as it can give you up to 1 hour more to your battery life.
The trick is easy: update your kernel to 2.6.21 if you are using a 32 bit system or 2.6.23 if you are using a 64 bit system. Of course recompile it but remember to activate the Tickless option (Processor Type and Features -> Tickless System (Dynamic Tics) ), or in the .config file: CONFIG_TICK_ONESHOT=y and CONFIG_NO_HZ=y .
After this install Intel's powertop: #apt-get install powertop
Now run it as root (and follow the tips shown): #powertop
I've made a little script using powertop's tips (you can save it in /bin/min_power):
#!/bin/bashecho min_power >/sys/class/scsi_host/host0/link_power_management_policy
echo 1500 > /proc/sys/vm/dirty_writeback_centisec
Now the last step: we want this script to be activated when working with battery, so just edit
/etc/acpi/actions/lm_battery.sh and add in the last line:
/bin/min_power
